We See You Parents of LGBTQ Children
Lessons I Learned
As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a mother's world is shaken when her son and then her daughter come out as members of the LGBTQ community. Mary Beth grapples with questions that shake parts of the foundation of faith she built.
Why does the LGBTQ community use the rainbow as its symbol? Should children continue attending church services even when they feel ostracized and emotionally unsafe? What are the five stages of coming out that her children would experience, and how do those stages impact a parent's journey as parents try to accept this new reality? How do parents respond when their children have questions about their identities, and how can parents best support and be an ally to the LGBTQ community?
Seeking answers, Mary Beth immersed herself in research, poring over books, articles, and first-hand accounts from LGBTQ individuals and their families. She learned about the five stages of coming out and how they often mirror the five stages parents go through in accepting their child's identity.
As Mary Beth allowed the whisperings of the Spirit to guide her as she navigated this new and unexpected path, she came to a profound understanding of unconditional love, both for her children and for herself.
Her book serves as a beacon of hope for other parents facing similar journeys, offering practical advice, spiritual guidance, and the hard-won assurance that they are not alone. Though the road is difficult, Mary Beth's message is one of love, acceptance, and the eternal truth that every child of God is worthy of inclusion, respect, and the opportunity to live an authentic life. In the end, Mary Beth's faith is strengthened rather than diminished by her experiences. She becomes an advocate for her children and the LDS LGBTQ community, using her voice and her story to help create a more inclusive, loving world within the LDS church culture.
