by Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadii
From the book:
As for those who misuse wealth, they fall into two categories:
The first: The merchants. They are not careful to spend their wealth in the correct, legislated avenues. Some of them even neglect to pay zakāh, while others provide it in ways that are not legislated. Instead, they support partisan groups that have divided the Muslims and weakened their strength. Through their actions, these merchants are unknowingly supporting falsehood, perhaps even contributing to the spread of Ṣūfism or the innovation of Shīʿism, both of which have become obstacles in the path of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
The second: Those who stealthily seek out zakāh while not even being eligible for it, and then spend it on their personal interests.
Even more disgraceful is the behavior of some students of knowledge who waste their time and degrade the status of knowledge and daʿwah, fleeing from the land of the Ḥaramayn to Kuwait, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. When asked, “What’s the matter with you, so-and-so?” he replies: “I’m in debt,” or, “I want to build a masjid and housing for the imām (who is himself),” or, “I want a car for daʿwah,” or, “I want to get married.”
