A mother's journey through loss, grief and faith in God

The Splintered Self

by Carol-Anne Naylor

About The Book

This piece is unlike anything I’ve written before.
It isn’t a children’s story or a classroom reflection, but something deeply personal, born from loss, longing, faith, and the slow, uneven path toward healing.

My essay The Splintered Self has now been shared on the Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss website, and now I'm making it available as a small book.

Although it draws from my own experiences of grief and anxiety, I haven’t written or shared it for sympathy, but in the hope that it might speak to others walking through similar shadows whether through pregnancy loss, infertility, trauma, or the quiet battles we rarely name aloud.

If you know someone who is struggling, someone who feels unseen or alone in their grief, I would be honoured if you shared this piece with them. Sometimes, just knowing we are not alone can bring a little light into the dark.

To every person who has loved and lost, who has kept breathing when it felt impossible, this is for you.
You are seen.
You are not broken beyond repair.
And you are not alone.

Carol-Anne Naylor

Carol-Anne is a storyteller who weaves worlds of wonder and emotion for readers of all ages.

For children, her novels Memoirs of Faeries and Secrets of the Quercus Tree open the door to hidden realms where courage, nature, and imagination meet. Stories for readers aged 8+ who still believe in magic. Inspired by her own childhood adventures in grand gardens and quiet libraries, and by her lifelong love of stories that whisper of something beyond, Carol-Anne believes that every tale whether magical or mysterious begins with the same spark: the search for truth. For older readers, she writes chic noir and psychological thrillers that explore loss, hidden identities, and the fragile threads that bind relationships. Her adult fiction delves into the question of who we are beneath the masks we wear, blending tension and tenderness in equal measure. When she’s not writing, she can be found teaching, wandering through the woods with her family, or settling down with hot chocolate and music to dream up her next story.

As Kaelen begins to uncover the truth about his power and his past, he learns that magic is never without consequence. Watched by forces older than the world itself, and drawn into a fate he does not yet understand, Kaelen must navigate shifting loyalties, dangerous trials, and a power that threatens to fracture more than just his future.
