The Hidden Cost of the Badge and the Path to Survival

Surviving Policing

by Norm Wielsch

Written by former law enforcement officer Norm Wielsch, Surviving Policing is a tactical wellness manual designed to help first responders and dispatchers navigate the invisible costs of the job. Drawing from 26 years on the front lines, a battle with PTSD and addiction, and ultimate recovery, Wielsch provides a raw, actionable guide to healing the nervous system, protecting family life, and reclaiming identity beyond the badge.
Inside, you will discover:
The Biology of Trauma: Practical tools to dismantle PTSD, manage hyper-vigilance, and reset a fried nervous system during high-stress shifts.
Support for Dispatchers: Validation and strategies addressing the unique "ghost trauma" experienced by unseen first responders.
The 72-Hour Critical Incident Protocol: Clear guidelines on how to navigate the immediate and long-term aftermath of a traumatic event.
The War at Home: A decoder ring for spouses to understand the psychological ripple effect and safeguard marriage and family life.
Identity Beyond the Badge: Roadmap strategies for transitioning into retirement as a whole person, not just a former officer.
Whether you are in a patrol car, at the console, or supporting a first responder on the home front, Surviving Policing delivers the blueprint to move past basic survival and start thriving.

About The Book

In the fall of 2010, Norm Wielsch stood on a dark frontage road with his badge clipped to a suicide note and his duty weapon in his hand. After 26 years in the arena—SWAT, Narcotics, and hundreds of high-risk warrants—the "unseen costs" of the job had finally collected their debt. Norm’s story didn't end on that road, but it went through the fire of over 30 surgeries, a battle with opioid addiction, and 8 years in Federal Prison before he found the path to true reconstruction. Now a Doctor of Christian Counseling, an Addiction Counselor, and Chaplain, Norm has turned his tragedy into a tactical map for every man and woman wearing the badge or headset.
This isn't just a book about police work; it’s a tactical manual for the first responder. Whether you are considering a career, six months into the job or twenty years deep, this guide provides the biological and psychological "reboot" you need to survive the job.
Inside Surviving Policing, you will find the tools to dismantle the "stuck points" that keep you trapped in the past and the biological hacks to reset a nervous system fried by years of hyper-vigilance.
In these pages, you will discover:
The Pillars of PTSD: Understand the "why" behind the flashbacks, the irritability, and the numbness.
The Visual Void: A dedicated look at the unique, "ghost trauma" carried by dispatchers and invisible first responders.
The aftermath of a traumatic critical incident: What to do and not to do during the first 72 hours, after the 72 hours, and long-term wellness.
The War at Home: How to stop the "Ripple Effect" and protect your marriage and children from the residue of the shift.
Tactical Wellness: Real-time tools—like Tactical Breathing and other grounding tools—to find your "brake pedal" during a chaotic shift.
Identity Beyond the Badge: How to prepare for a retirement where you are a whole person, not just a "former officer."
Dispatchers: Because You Matter as Much as the Units You Dispatch.
For too long, dispatchers have been told their trauma isn't "real" because they weren't "there." Norm is here to tell you that’s a lie. Your brain doesn't know the difference between a lens and a headset—it only knows the stress.
The War Doesn’t End When the Shift Does.
Surviving Policing is the first book that speaks directly to the "Home Front." It provides spouses with the biological and psychological "decoder ring" to understand why their officer acts the way they do—and how to help them find the way back to being a husband, a wife, and a parent.
At the end of each chapter there is a QR Code that leads you to a short video with a synopsis of the chapter.
Whether you are an officer sitting in a patrol car, a dispatcher at the console, or a spouse watching your loved one disappear behind a wall of silence, this book is the beginning of your healing.
You’ve stood watch for your community for years. Now, it’s time to stand watch for yourself. It’s time to stop just "surviving" the job and start thriving at home.
The mission starts now. Let’s get to work.

Christ Centered Healing of Trauma

Christ Centered Healing of Trauma

Norm Wielsch is a law enforcement veteran, including 16 years undercover, before PTSD, chronic illness, and opioid dependence led to a series of destructive choices and ultimately a federal prison sentence. In prison, he surrendered his life to Christ, earned advanced degrees in theology and Christian counseling, and began ministering to inmates through Bible studies, counseling, and trauma healing. Today, Norm Dr. Wielsch, D.C.C., is an addiction counselor, chaplain, and author who teaches and ministers to those suffering from trauma, addiction, and spiritual brokenness.

Norm Wielsch spent 26 years as a cop, including 16 years as an undercover narcotic agent, confronting danger and trauma on a daily basis. A seasoned police academy instructor and recognized expert in PTSD, police tactics, narcotic enforcement, pursuit driving, and first responder culture, Norm was no stranger to the high-stakes world of law enforcement. In 1998, his life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with PTSD and an incurable neuromuscular disease that caused severe loss of sensation, mobility, and strength in his hands and feet. After enduring more than 30 surgeries in a 10-year period, he became dependent on opioids. Struggling under the weight of emotional pain, physical suffering, and unresolved trauma, Norm made a series of sinful choices that ultimately led to a federal prison sentence. But prison wasn’t the end of his story—it was the beginning of his redemption. In the midst of his deepest trial, Norm heard the unmistakable call of God. It was behind bars that he surrendered fully to Christ and began ministering to others who, like him, carried deep wounds. He earned a Master’s Degree in Theology, a Doctorate in Christian Counseling, and a Drug and Alcohol Counseling Certificate. While incarcerated, he preached the Gospel, led Bible studies, and counseled fellow inmates—many of whom had experienced significant trauma. Through the Christ Centered Healing process, Norm witnessed firsthand the transforming power of God to heal broken hearts and renew lives. Today, Norm is an Addiction Counselor, a credentialed Chaplain, and a passionate advocate for trauma healing and recovery. He continues to speak, teach, counsel, and minister to those suffering from the effects of trauma, addiction, and spiritual wounds. He is the author of several works, including: • The Patrol Officer’s Guide to Narcotic Enforcement (1997) • Christ Centered Healing of Trauma: Healing a Broken Heart (2020) • Christ Centered Healing of Trauma: Healing a Broken Heart Study Guide (2020) • God’s Purpose in Pain: Why God Allows Suffering (2025) • Christ Centered Treatment of Addiction (2025) • Christ Centered Healing of Trauma Workbook (2025)
