It would be reasonable to ask why a book like this matters in the world we actually live in — a world preoccupied with economics, politics, technology, and a thousand visible problems. Why spend time on an invisible war that, as far as we can tell, concluded its opening battle before human history even began?
The answer is that the war did not end. According to the very Scriptures that describe its beginning, it continues — and we are living in the middle of it.
The New Testament does not present Satan as a defeated relic of ancient mythology. It presents him as an active adversary, described by Peter as a roaring lion seeking prey, described by Paul as the architect of an invisible system of "principalities and powers," described by John as a being whose fury intensifies precisely because he knows his time is short. The rebellion that began before Genesis did not end at Genesis. It continued through the corruption described before the Flood, through the spiritual conflicts of Israel's history, through the temptations of Christ himself in the wilderness, and — according to the New Testament's own account of reality — through the present moment in which you are reading these words.
If that is true, then understanding how this war began is not an academic exercise. It is essential intelligence. It tells us what we are dealing with, how it operates, what it wants, and — most importantly — how it has already been defeated, even while its final collapse is still unfolding.

Every book has a birthplace, and the birthplace of The Shepherd’s Manual lies in a deep, burning conviction that the modern church is adrift. We live in an era captivated by novelty. It was this burden that brought me back to the island of Crete—or rather, to the letter Paul wrote to the man tasked with taming it.
The Book of Titus has long been a sanctuary for my own soul. There is a kind of courage that scholarship demands of us — not the courage of the soldier or the pioneer, but something quieter and, in its own way, more difficult. It is the courage to sit before a sacred text you have read a thousand times, and allow yourself to see what is actually there, rather than what you have always been told is there. This book is the fruit of that courage, or perhaps, more honestly, of my long reluctance to exercise it.
I was trained in the classical evangelical tradition. I received my undergraduate degree in Biblical Studies at a fine institution where the King James Bible was regarded with the reverence it deserves, where the Genesis account was taught as a complete and self-sufficient cosmology, and where the idea that anything — any being, any civilization, any age of the world — had preceded Adam was dismissed with the kind of patient condescension reserved for the earnest but misguided. I absorbed those dismissals. I repeated them. For many years, I defended them.
Then, one the summer, I was preparing a sermon series on the opening chapters of Genesis. I had preached from Genesis many times. I believed I knew its terrain as well as I knew the roads of the county where I grew up. But that summer, for reasons I cannot fully explain, I slowed down. I read more carefully. I set aside my commentaries and went back to the Hebrew. And in the second verse of the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, I encountered something I could no longer pass over:
"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." — Genesis 1:2
I had read those words hundreds of times. But that summer I finally asked the question I had been trained not to ask: Why? Why was the earth formless and void? How does a God who, as Isaiah declares, 'created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited,' produce a world that is waste and empty? The standard answer — that this was simply the uncreated state of things, the raw material upon which God would work — had always satisfied me before. It no longer did.
Because I knew, from years of careful study, that the Hebrew phrase tohu va'bohu appears elsewhere in the Old Testament — and it does not describe an uncreated state. It describes the aftermath of judgment. It describes what a world looks like after God has visited it in wrath. And when Jeremiah uses those precise words in his great vision of desolation, he sees, in the same breath, broken-down cities. Cities that had stood before they were broken.
I closed my study door. I sat for a long time in silence. And I understood that the question I had been afraid to ask for twenty years was not a dangerous question at all. It was the most natural question in the world. It was the question that the text itself was quietly, persistently, generation after generation, asking of its readers.
What came before?

The study of Bible prophecy has fascinated believers for centuries. Entire libraries have been written about the end times, the Antichrist, the Day of the Lord, the Tribulation, and the return of Jesus Christ. Yet despite the abundance of books on these subjects, confusion often remains. Many Christians are overwhelmed by competing interpretations, sensational predictions, and speculative theories that sometimes obscure the simple truths found in God's Word.
The purpose of this book is not to add to that confusion but to bring clarity through a careful verse-by-verse examination of Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians.
Second Thessalonians is one of the most important prophetic books in the New Testament. Although it contains only three chapters, it addresses some of the most significant questions concerning the last days. Paul discusses the return of Christ, the judgment of the wicked, the future revelation of the man of lawlessness, the mystery of lawlessness already at work in the world, and the believer's responsibility to remain faithful while awaiting the Lord's return.

Their faith was being tested, and false teachers had caused many to believe that the Day of the Lord had already arrived. Fear and uncertainty had begun to spread throughout the church. Paul responded by reminding them of God's truth, correcting doctrinal error, and encouraging them to stand firm in their faith.
Those same challenges confront believers today.
We live in a world increasingly marked by spiritual deception, moral confusion, and open rebellion against God. The signs of lawlessness that Paul described seem more visible than ever before. Yet the message of 2 Thessalonians remains a message of hope. God has not lost control. Christ has not forgotten His church. The future is not determined by governments, economies, or world events. The future belongs to Jesus Christ.

As I began writing Chosen Before the Foundation: A Study of the Book of Philippians, I was continually reminded that the Christian life is not dependent upon outward circumstances but upon inward spiritual reality. The letter to Philemon is the shortest of Paul’s letters, the most personal, the most carefully constructed, and in some ways the most theologically concentrated. Twenty-five verses — a single papyrus sheet in the ancient world — containing more rhetorical skill per sentence than almost any other Pauline text, and more theological depth per word than a casual reading suggests. It has been dismissed as a private social note and celebrated as a masterwork of early Christian ethics; it has been used to justify slavery and to condemn it; it has been read as a polite request and as a barely veiled apostolic command. The range of interpretation tells us something important: the letter is doing more than it appears to be doing, and it rewards the kind of patient attention that its brevity makes possible.

The situation is not complicated in its basic facts. Onesimus is a slave belonging to Philemon, a member of a house church in Colossae. He has run away — and may have also stolen something from Philemon in the process. He has found his way to Paul, who is in prison, and has been converted under Paul’s ministry. Paul is now writing to Philemon to send Onesimus back, but the letter is saturated with the language of appeal, obligation, love, partnership, and the transformed relationship that the gospel creates. The facts are simple; the theology embedded in the appeal is profound.

The letter moves through five movements. The greeting (verses 1–3) establishes the relational and social network within which the appeal is being made — not merely to Philemon but to Apphia, Archippus, and the whole church that meets in Philemon’s house. The thanksgiving (verses 4–7) establishes Philemon’s track record as a man of love and faith, whose love has refreshed the hearts of the saints, before the appeal is made — the pastoral strategy of affirming the character before calling it to its fullest expression. The appeal itself (verses 8‖16) is Paul’s most carefully constructed rhetorical unit, declining to command what he could command and choosing instead the path of appeal that will make Philemon’s response genuinely voluntary. The practical arrangements (verses 17–21) specify what Paul is asking and offer to absorb the financial consequences himself. And the closing (verses 22–25) situates the letter in the ongoing apostolic network.

The most theologically significant element of the letter is the status transformation that the gospel has accomplished in Onesimus, and the implications of that transformation for the relationship between Onesimus and Philemon. Paul describes Onesimus as his very heart (verse 12), as a beloved brother (verse 16), and says that in receiving Onesimus back, Philemon is receiving Paul himself (verse 17). The logic is the logic of the gospel: the one who was once useless has become useful; the one who was a slave is now a brother beloved, both in the flesh and in the Lord. The gospel does not merely add a spiritual dimension to an unchanged social relationship; it creates a new kind of relationship that the old categories cannot fully contain. Whether Paul is asking Philemon to free Onesimus or simply to receive him back as a brother is debated, but the direction of the argument is clear: the gospel has made something of Onesimus that the institution of slavery has no category for.

The Book of Jude speaks directly to the modern church. We live in an age where biblical truth is often questioned, moral standards are redefined, and many embrace spirituality without submission to God's Word. Jude reminds believers that truth is not determined by culture, popularity, or personal opinion. It has been revealed by God and entrusted to His people.

This epistle challenges every generation to stand courageously for biblical doctrine while extending Christlike mercy to those who have been influenced by error. It calls the church to discernment without bitterness, conviction without compromise, and confidence without fear.

Though Jude contains stern warnings, it ultimately offers profound hope. The God who calls His people is the same God who keeps them. Therefore, Christians can face a world of deception with unwavering confidence, knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ will ultimately judge evil, vindicate His truth, and present His redeemed people faultless before His glorious presence.

As I have studied and written this commentary, I have been repeatedly reminded that the greatest danger facing God's people is not always persecution from the outside but spiritual complacency from within.
