The Story of Zen
Resilience and Hope
On March 14, 1795, Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer was killed by the British. About a year later, his people, the Garifuna were exiled from their homeland Yurumein (St. Vincent). There is very limited documentation as to what his people went through during the period and how those who escaped the exile attempt survived. All that we are left with are our creative imaginations as to how those people survived. This fictional piece aims to bring to life a narrative about the survival of the Garifuna people in St. Vincent. The female protagonist Zen is used as the beacon of hope and resilience that led the people to safety against formidable opposition from the British.
