About The Book

In the Slipstream: A Pilot's Journey Through War, Peace, and the Creation of American Air Power is a military biography tracing the life and service of Colonel Blanchard K. Watts, a U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Air Force combat pilot whose 30 year career spanned the formative decades of American air power. Written with an emphasis on historical accuracy and operational detail, the book draws on flight logs, squadron records, official reports, and personal correspondence. Watts's firsthand account of launching from the British escort carrier HMS Archer during Operation TORCH is included as a primary-source appendix.

The narrative begins with Watts's early training and entry into combat during World War II, focusing on operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the China-Burma-India Theater. Flying with the 33rd Fighter Group, he participated in Operation TORCH, Operation HUSKY, and Operation AVALANCHE, supporting Allied landings in North Africa, Pantelleria, Sicily, and mainland Italy. He later led the 59th Fighter Squadron into the CBI, serving as a Flying Tiger under the air combat doctrine developed by Claire Chennault. His combat service was recognized with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 12 oak leaf clusters .

Following the war, In the Slipstream traces Watts through the transition from piston aircraft to early jets, test flying, and advanced training assignments alongside Chuck Yeager, Glen Edwards, and Bob Hoover. The book also documents the historic events happening on the ground at his various stations during his service.

The book concludes with Watts's senior operational roles, including training the pilots of the Republic of China Air Force under the government of Chiang Kai-shek, working within the practical limits of advisory aviation rather than diplomatic strategy and his service as a command pilot of the B-52 Stratofortress and subsequent staff assignments. Rather than presenting a legend or a rediscovered hero, In the Slipstream offers a true-to-life account of a professional test pilot and combat aviator whose career unfolded quietly alongside the giants of aviation, warfare, and strategy in a career representative of the generation that built American air power without expecting to be remembered.

“For a young fighter pilot, it was a rare crossing of levels, a moment when the architects of the air war stepped briefly into the life of a man flying it.”
