And the Gospel I'm Beginning To See

The "Gospel" I Grew Up On

by James E. Alderman

What if the gospel really is better than we’ve been told?

About The Book

For many of us, the gospel we grew up on began with fear, separation, sin, judgment, and the pressure to measure up. We were told God loved us, but we often learned to see Him through the lens of wrath, distance, and performance.

In The “Gospel” I Grew Up On, James E. Alderman takes readers back through the familiar message he inherited—the Romans Road, courtroom salvation, original sin, TULIP, judgment, and the belief that humanity begins separated from God. With honesty, Scripture, and deep personal reflection, he traces the impact that message had on his heart, his faith, and his understanding of the Father.

But this book does not stop with the gospel James grew up on.

It opens into the gospel he is beginning to see: a gospel rooted in love before the foundation of the world, union in Christ, inclusion, reconciliation, and the astonishing goodness of God revealed in Jesus. This is not a new gospel, but an ancient and beautiful good news that has been there all along.

With a foreword by Don Keathley, this revised edition is both testimony and invitation. It is written for anyone who has questioned the gospel they inherited, sensed there must be more to the good news, or longed to know a Father who is not distant, angry, or waiting to condemn.

The gospel is not about measuring up.

It is about waking up to the love that has always been yours.

The party has already started, and we are not outsiders waiting to be let in.

Find out about our TV show Finding Our Way https://www.findingourway.co Thanks for dropping by! May the Lord's face shine upon you. This bookstore is shaped by a vision that sees God not as angry, distant and demanding obeisance, but as eternal self-giving Love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit made visible in Jesus Christ. The books you’ll find here are written from that center: a place where grace is deeper than fear, where mercy has the final word, and the heart of God is revealed in compassion, forgiveness, and restoring love. The pages of our books carry a living hope: the belief that, in Christ, God has always been near, always been for us, and always been at work drawing humanity into wholeness. Every title grows out of the conviction that Christ’s story is woven into our own that through His life, death, and resurrection, reconciliation is not a distant promise but a present reality waiting to be awakened to. You’ll see this spirit especially in "Getting To Know Papa", where intimacy, belonging, and love echo the greater truth that we are never separate from the One who created us. Come and let's dispel together the shadowy vestiges of our religious upbringing. As more books are added, each will continue this same proclamation: God is our Father, Jesus is the Savior of the world, salvation is a gift, forgiveness is a given, faith is awakening, grace is not earned; and the gospel is, at its heart, the beautiful unveiling of Christ in us the hope of glory alive in everyone's story.

James and his high school sweetheart, Christi, make their home in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Together, they have three children and their spouses—Zach (Lindsey), Austin (Matt), and Chloe (Dylan)—as well as six beloved grandchildren: Ella Grace, Kash, Hadley Kate, Addi James, Eli, and Tate. After completing seminary and serving as the pastor of two churches, James transitioned into the Oil & Gas Industry, where he continues to work today. He has a passion for old things, especially trucks and cars, enjoys getting lost in a good book, and is a lover of people.
