The Off-Grid Homestead: A Complete Regional Guide to Self-Sufficient Living
Whether you've just purchased your first acre or have been dreaming of independence for years, Off the Grid is the only guide you need to build a truly self-sustaining life — from the ground up.
Organized by U.S. region, this comprehensive manual walks you through everything: selecting and reading your land, harvesting water, building food forests that feed themselves, harnessing solar, wind, and hydro power, and constructing shelter from the earth beneath your feet. No filler, no fluff — just practical, regionally specific guidance for every climate in America.
Your land. Your water. Your food. Your freedom.

About The Book

The Off-Grid Homestead: A Complete Regional Guide to Self-Sufficient Living
Imagine waking up on land that is entirely yours — powered by the sun, watered by the rain, and fed by trees and plants that need nothing from you but time. No utility bills. No supply chain. No dependence on systems you didn't build and can't control. That life is not a fantasy. It is a set of skills, decisions, and plantings — and this book walks you through every one of them.
Off the Grid is the most comprehensive regional guide to self-sufficient living ever written for the American homesteader. Whether you have just signed the deed on your first piece of land or have spent years planning your escape from the conventional grid, this book meets you where you are and takes you exactly where you want to go.
Built Around Where You Actually Live
Most homesteading books treat the entire country as if it were one place. It isn't. The water strategies that save your life in Arizona will drown your budget in Vermont. The food forest that thrives in the Pacific Northwest will fail in the Great Plains. Off the Grid is organized into seven distinct regional guides — the Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountain, Great Plains, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast — each written with the specific climate, terrain, rainfall, soil, wildlife, and legal landscape of that region in mind. You get the information that applies to your land, not someone else's.
Food That Feeds Itself
At the heart of this book is a philosophy that changes everything: stop planting gardens and start planting ecosystems. The no-maintenance food forest model — refined over thousands of years by Indigenous peoples and modern permaculture practitioners alike — layers fruit trees, nut trees, berry shrubs, nitrogen-fixing companions, ground covers, and vines into a self-sustaining system that grows more productive every year with less and less input from you. Every regional chapter includes a complete, climate-specific plant guide covering which trees, shrubs, cacti, berries, and perennials will thrive on your land, produce food abundantly, and largely take care of themselves once established.
Water, Energy, and Shelter — From First Principles
Beyond food, true off-grid independence rests on three pillars: water you control, energy you generate, and shelter built to work with your climate rather than against it. Off the Grid covers all three in depth. You will learn how to harvest and store rainwater, develop springs, drill wells, and build greywater recycling systems tailored to your region's laws and resources. You will learn how to design and size solar arrays, micro-hydro systems, and wind installations that match your actual energy needs and local conditions. And you will learn how to build — or commission — structures that use thermal mass, passive solar orientation, and natural materials to stay comfortable year-round without mechanical heating or cooling.
From Day One to Year Ten
This is not a book of concepts. It is a book of action. Every chapter is built around practical decisions you will face in sequence: how to read your land before you touch it, how to phase your plantings over five years, how to size your water system before you dig a single trench, how to orient your structure before you pour a single footing. The guidance moves with you from the first 90 days on your land through the long arc of building a property that becomes more resilient, more productive, and more beautiful with every passing season.
The Life That Is Waiting
The homestead you build will outlast you. The trees you plant will feed people you haven't met yet. The water systems you install will still be running decades from now. The skills you learn and teach will carry forward long after the grid itself has changed beyond recognition. Off the Grid is not just a manual — it is an invitation to build something that matters, on land that is yours, in a life that belongs entirely to you.
Your land. Your water. Your food. Your freedom.

Welcome to our bookstore.

We are the children of Henry Stanley Rynkowski Jr., and together we are writing the story of our father’s life. Raised by a man who believed deeply in discipline, loyalty, humor, and love for family, we each carry different memories of the lessons he taught us. Our father was a retired Army Ranger, a passionate outdoorsman, and above all else, a devoted husband and father. He spent 52 years married to the love of his life, building a family rooted in strength, laughter, and resilience. Whether he was teaching us how to work hard, sharing stories from the outdoors, or simply spending time together, he left a lasting impression on everyone around him. After his passing in January of 2026, we realized that the stories we grew up hearing—the adventures, the challenges, the humor, and the wisdom—deserved to be preserved. So we began writing. Also enjoy some of our coffee while your read!! www.foxholecoffeeco.com
