An Advent Devotional and Study of Isaiah 9:6

He Shall Be Called

by Dr. Shawna M. Carpenter

"He Shall Be Called" is a four-week Advent devotional and Bible study exploring the four names of Jesus found in Isaiah 9:6: "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace."

Through daily readings, simple weekly practices, and an in-depth Scripture study, you’ll discover what these ancient names reveal about who Jesus is—and what it means to follow him today.

This Advent, go beyond the familiar Christmas story and encounter the One who was promised.

Four names. One Savior. Hope for every season.

About The Book

Long before the manger in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah spoke of a child who would come into a world marked by darkness, uncertainty, and fear:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6

Those familiar words are more than a beautiful Christmas prophecy. Each name reveals something about the identity and character of the One who was coming—and each points us to Jesus.

*He Shall Be Called: An Advent Devotional and Study of Isaiah 9:6* is a four-week journey designed to help you slow down during the Christmas season and encounter Jesus through these four names.

Each week focuses on one name:

Wonderful Counselor — the God whose wisdom has no equal

Mighty God — the God who is strong to save

Everlasting Father — the King whose faithful care never ends

Prince of Peace — the King who reconciles, restores, and makes things whole

The devotional includes five readings each week, along with a simple spiritual practice designed to be repeated throughout the week. Rather than adding one more Christmas activity to an already busy season, these practices invite you to develop rhythms of seeking Jesus, releasing what you cannot carry, receiving his care, and practicing his peace.

But the journey doesn't stop with devotional reflection.

The second portion of the book invites you to go deeper into Scripture. Beginning with the historical setting of Isaiah 9, the accompanying Bible studies trace each of the four names throughout Scripture—examining their Old Testament background, their meaning within Isaiah, and their fulfillment in Jesus. Observation questions, cross-references, and space for personal study help you discover these truths in the biblical text for yourself.

Whether you use the book for personal Advent devotions, work through it with a small group, or simply want to understand Isaiah's prophecy more deeply, *He Shall Be Called* is an invitation to move beyond the familiarity of the Christmas story and rediscover the One at its center.

Because our hope is not ultimately found in having all the answers, becoming strong enough, finding perfect security, or creating a peaceful life.

Our Counselor is a person.
Our strength is a person.
Our security is a person.
Our peace is a person.

And his name is Jesus.
