The Nuevas Montañas Files
by J. Dale Dillard
A deputy and a wounded witness collide with a sprawling criminal network. She survived because they made mistakes. So they tried something else: they made her disappear. Set in the desert borderlands of southern New Mexico, No Safe Harbor is a procedural thriller about the limits of justice when the rules are written by the people you're trying to stop. It's about choosing to keep moving. Book One of The Nuevas Montañas Files.
A deputy and a wounded witness collide with a sprawling criminal network. The rescue was supposed to be the easy part.
When armed assailants storm a Nuevas Montañas hospital to finish what they started, Deputy Rick Hunter is shot protecting the woman in the bed beside him — and finds himself at the center of an investigation far larger than a single act of violence.
She survived because they made mistakes. So they tried something else: they made her disappear. Her name erased, her records rewritten, her life filed into a digital silence designed to leave no trace. Now Hunter has to keep her alive long enough to understand what, and who, she's evidence of.
What follows is a widening investigation into human trafficking, coordinated cyber frames, and an organization that doesn't just kill its victims. It deletes them. No records. No witnesses. No survivors.
The deeper they go, the more they uncover a system built not to be exposed but to outlast the people trying to expose it. The man at the top has no name in the files. The trail dead-ends in bureaucratic noise. Every official statement about the case being "dismantled" is a careful lie.
Set in the desert borderlands of southern New Mexico, No Safe Harbor is a procedural thriller about the limits of justice when the rules themselves are written by the people you're trying to stop. It's about what survives when systems fail. It's about choosing to keep moving when there is nowhere truly safe to go.
No Safe Harbor is Book One of The Nuevas Montañas Files — a debut crime thriller for readers of Don Winslow, John Sandford, and Michael Connelly.
The Nuevo Montañas Files: NO SAFE HARBOR is my debut novel. A deputy and a wounded woman collide with a sprawling criminal network—and the rescue is only the beginning. When armed assailants storm a hospital to finish what they started, Deputy Rick Hunter is shot, and the attack reveals something far larger than a single act of violence. What follows is a widening investigation into human trafficking, a coordinated cyber frame, and an organization that erases people by rewriting their identities. As each lead pulls them deeper, they uncover a system designed to leave no trace—no records, no witnesses, no survivors. The closer they get to the truth, the clearer it becomes: this is not a case that ends with an arrest. When the system fails and the enemy has no name, how far are you willing to go to fight back?
I was born in Roswell, New Mexico, and grew up in Las Cruces. My background in journalism and information technology, along with experience working alongside emergency dispatch and law enforcement professionals, informs the novel’s procedural and cyber elements.
