Jeanette writes passionately about horse and dog topics "always with them in mind."
Jeanette Gower has been breeding Australian Stock Horses for over 50 years in South Australia under the Chalani prefix. Jeanette taught adult Equine Studies for 19 years and has written numerous articles for equine magazines. Based on her years of experience breeding horses, Jeanette challenges the reader to consider the goals, methods, and responsibilities of horse breeding seriously. She supports readers in making the best decisions possible to overcome challenges and succeed in the industry. Her no-nonsense, practical approach gives the art, science, and tools for novices and seasoned horse lovers alike to refer to again and again. Jeanette Gower is also a long-time dog lover from South Australia, with decades of hands-on experience working closely with dogs of all breeds. Her experience with dogs began early. At just eight years old, she was already attending obedience classes with her first Shetland Sheepdog. That early love for training and connection continued through life. She has bred Shetland Sheepdogs and raised a variety of dogs over the years, including Italian Greyhounds, Cattle Dogs, retired Greyhounds, and a lively Dachshund or two. Her background spans a lifetime of animal husbandry, not only with dogs, but also as a respected breeder of horses and published author in the equine world. Jeanette’s insights come from the paddock, the kitchen, and the show world. In 1999, she wrote the widely acclaimed book Horse Colour Explained, which published in over 30 countries, and had a Dutch translation. In 2023, she published her second book, The Thinking Horse Breeder: A Comprehensive Guide to Successful Horse Breeding. This book has received extremely favourable reviews and has sold in multiple countries. It is also available as an Audiobook and in Spanish. In 2024, she wrote The Rannock Legacy, The Story of a Remarkable Horse, the keystone stallion in the Gower's breeding programme. She also writes a popular blog, Reflections on 50+ Years of Horse Breeding, on Substack, and The Thinking Horse Breeder Facebook page.
