She learns the house by its sounds — the plank at the landing, the boy who reads badly, the step that creaks under the water jar — and she learns to count the gap between lightning and thunder, because it is the one measurement left to her.
Nine days north, a war the court expected to win is coming apart. Orders arrive where they should not. A flank holds that should have broken. A Crown Prince goes down in a field he had no business being in, and wakes up alive with no idea why.
And a young man from a river town keeps walking north, again and again, to save the life of a man he has never met and cannot stop thinking about.
Volume Two of three. Parts Four to Six — The River Years, The War, and The Mountain. Two of these three run at the same time, in two places, and the book is built so you feel them closing.
It ends in a cave above the river town, in forty-three days that change what everyone is willing to do.
