The Boarding School at the End of the Dirt Road

After the death of their mother, two teenage brothers are sent by their father to a tough boarding school in rural Saskatchewan. For Mike, the older sibling, it’s a year of anxiety and quiet struggle as he tries to fit into the rigid, often cruel, Old Boy system. He feels responsible for protecting his younger brother, Clifford—a brilliant, awkward misfit who doesn’t care about fitting in and refuses to play by anyone’s rules but his own.

Mike represents the author’s real-life experience as a nervous newcomer, overwhelmed by fear, peer pressure, and the need to belong. Clifford, by contrast, is the boy the author wishes he had been—fearless, self-assured, and willing to challenge the status quo.

Based on a pivotal year at Athol Murray’s Notre Dame College, this novel blends fact and fiction to explore the pain and growth of adolescence, the tension between conformity and individuality, and the enduring pull of place. Though the author once vowed never to return to Saskatchewan, it ultimately became home—where he found love, purpose, and peace.

Names and characters have been changed, but the spirit of the story remains deeply true.

The Hermit Murder

The Hermit Murder

In the harsh winter of 1925, deep in the snow-laden Gatineau Hills near St. Pierre de Wakefield, a chilling mystery stirred to life. At its heart was not a cunning detective or a storied villain, but a nameless hermit—an aging recluse who lived alone, his life as veiled as the forest that surrounded him.

As Christmas approached and the quiet region prepared for the holiday, the hermit failed to collect the pork cuttings he had ordered from a nearby farm. For a man of habit—even one so isolated—his absence raised alarm. Concerned neighbors, braving the bitter cold and waist-deep snow, made the trek to his remote cabin.

What they found would mark them forever.

In the hermit’s dim, earthen cellar, beneath the flickering glow of a half-burned candle, lay his body—mutilated beyond recognition. Blood had stained the floor. Silence pressed in. This was no accident. It was murder.

The investigation fell to the local sheriff, responsible for the sprawling rural district surrounding Hull, Quebec. But realizing the grim magnitude of the crime, he quickly summoned two of Quebec Provincial Police’s most seasoned detectives—Dalpe and Germaine. Both were veterans of darker worlds. But Dalpe bore a deeper wound: his wife had recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Still, he pressed on, committed to the case with relentless determination, even as his heart quietly fractured.

Leads soon pointed to a peculiar young man—an itinerant laborer known for odd jobs on nearby farms. His connection to a respected family in the village only deepened the intrigue. Under pressure, he cast suspicion on another man—someone who hadn’t been seen in years. A ghost of the region. A fugitive.

That man was eventually tracked to the Sudbury area and brought back to Hull—a reluctant, yet crucial, material witness. What followed was a twisting tale of deceit, betrayal, and revelation, with the line between guilt and innocence blurring as the investigation peeled back layers of long-held secrets.

All of this unfolded in an era when Hull, Quebec, teetered on the edge of lawlessness. Nicknamed “Little Chicago,” the city was a haven for mobsters and bootleggers, where corruption thrived in the shadows and justice was often a matter of will, not law.

The Hermit Murder is more than a true crime story. It’s a journey into a forgotten time—a haunting, real-life mystery steeped in atmosphere, driven by human frailty, and resolved in a conclusion as shocking as it is unforgettable.

Dalpe and the Roots of Evil

Two Dalpe Classics

A New Detective in Town

Matthew 12:35 — “The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.”

Young detective JP Dalpe is thrown into Montreal’s underbelly, tasked with exposing his corrupt Vice Squad partner, Detective Shea Gleason. Gleason is more than just a dirty cop—he’s the puppet master behind a web of bribery, intimidation, and murder, controlling city hall and the police force alike.

As a special task force investigates, Dalpe must gain Gleason’s trust and find the proof to bring him down. But when Gleason orders him to commit murder as a test of loyalty, Dalpe’s cover—and his conscience—are pushed to the limit. The stakes escalate when the supposed victim reemerges, threatening to unravel everything.

In a final, deadly showdown between good and evil, only one man will walk away.

Chasing the Woodsmen

Norman MacDonald — “A great cause of evil in the world is that men seldom think themselves criminal if they offer the same injustice to others that has been successfully practiced on themselves.”

When two Quebec woodsmen murder a pulp mill manager for cheating them, justice takes the form of revenge. Detective JP Dalpe, still mourning his wife’s death, volunteers for the near-suicidal mission to track them into the frozen wilderness.

Guided by a legendary trapper and his young son, Dalpe must battle the elements, his own grief, and the woodsmen’s ruthless survival instincts. To capture them, he must think like them—and question where justice truly lies.

Both stories pit Dalpe against forces far greater than himself. In the streets or the wild, survival demands more than just the law.

• A moment of road rage on the Trans-Canada Highway turns deadly. A high-speed chase leads to two deaths and the near murder of two innocent women.

Dalpe and the Nazi

Here’s a more compelling and polished version of your description:

A chance encounter on the Lac Cayamant Road in West Quebec changes everything.

Retired Quebec Provincial Police Detective JP Dalpe has built a peaceful life with his wife along the lake’s quiet shores, far removed from the chaos of World War II raging across the ocean. But that peace is shattered when he crosses paths with James Winston, a seemingly unremarkable young man claiming to be establishing an outfitter camp on the lake’s northern shores.

But Winston is no ordinary newcomer. He is an agent of the German military intelligence service, the Abwehr, embedded in Canada under false pretenses. His true mission? To lead a deadly terrorist attack on the Canadian Parliament.

For Winston, the plan is simple—remain hidden, bide his time, and strike when the moment is right. For Dalpe, the war was always a distant concern, not a threat to the quiet life he and his wife had envisioned. But as the saying goes, “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.”

When Dalpe casually mentions his encounter with Winston to locals, the consequences are swift and brutal. Winston is forced to kill a conservation officer and abandon his hideout. Now, he is on the run—and willing to eliminate anyone in his way.

With Nazi sabotage, betrayal, and a relentless hunt unfolding in the heart of Canada, Dalpe and his wife find themselves in mortal danger. As war creeps closer to home, one retired detective must rise to the challenge—before history takes a deadly turn.

A high-stakes, action-packed thriller, this gripping tale plunges readers into a time when Canada’s war efforts hung in the balance, and the fight against the Axis powers wasn’t just fought overseas—but right in our own backyard.

Dalpe and the Communist Spies

Here’s a more compelling and polished version of your description:

TREASON. ESPIONAGE. CONSPIRACY. ASSAULT. MURDER.

Based on the true events of the 1945 Igor Gouzenko Affair, Dalpe and the Communist Spies is a gripping historical thriller that plunges readers into a world of betrayal, Cold War espionage, and buried secrets.

Retired Detective JP Dalpe travels to Ottawa with his wife, Sharon, who is being admitted to the Royal Ottawa Hospital for anxiety and depression. But her suffering runs deeper than any diagnosis—she and Dalpe have been keeping a dark, corrosive secret for years. While Dalpe has managed to suppress it, Sharon cannot heal until the truth is finally spoken.

As Dalpe wrestles with his past, a request from an old neighbor, Gloria Turner, drags him into something far more dangerous. Mrs. Turner has been attacked, and the assailant is no ordinary criminal. What begins as a simple act of assistance quickly entangles Dalpe in one of the greatest intelligence scandals in history—a Soviet spy network operating deep within Ottawa.

At the heart of it all is Igor Gouzenko, a Russian cipher clerk who defects from the Soviet embassy, bringing with him evidence of an insidious plot. Stolen documents, classified blueprints, and national security secrets—all funneled to Moscow. The Canadian government is stunned, and the world is about to change forever.

As Dalpe’s investigation collides with the Gouzenko Affair, the stakes grow deadlier by the day. The truth is dangerous. The enemy is watching. And in a world where spies kill to keep their secrets, Dalpe must navigate treachery and deception to expose a conspiracy that could alter the course of history.

A masterful blend of historical fact and pulse-pounding fiction, Dalpe and the Communist Spies will leave readers spellbound as they unravel the courageous tale of Igor Gouzenko and the thrilling, high-stakes pursuit of truth and justice.

Black Tuesday

The Estevan Riot

Here’s a more compelling and engaging revision:

Black Tuesday, September 29, 1931—a day that left scars on a community and a family. When striking coal miners from Bienfait marched through Estevan, Saskatchewan, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police opened fire. Bullets tore through the crowd, hitting miners and bystanders alike. The ensuing chaos left many wounded—both police officers and miners. Three miners lay dead.

One of them was Chad Walker’s grandfather.

After the tragedy, Chad’s grandmother fled with his father to Calgary, seeking a new beginning. But for Chad, growing up in a poor neighborhood with an alcoholic, embittered father, the past was inescapable. He was raised on dark, fragmented stories of the strike—stories laced with anger, loss, and injustice.

Decades later, in 1981, Chad stumbles upon Estevan: A History, a two-volume account published by the town’s Historical Committee. To his shock, there is no mention of Black Tuesday—no acknowledgment of the event that shaped his family’s fate.

Determined to uncover the truth, Chad travels to Estevan. What he finds is more than a buried history; it’s a harrowing tale of miners and their families crushed under the heel of ruthless coal operators—men who left the workers no choice but to strike. As he pieces together his grandfather’s story, Chad is forced to confront his own identity.

But Estevan offers more than just painful revelations. In the quiet stacks of the local library, he meets a young, captivating librarian. Her warmth and intelligence awaken something in him. For years, Chad has been a driven, successful oilman, but wealth has never filled the void inside him. In her, he discovers a happiness he never thought possible.

His journey begins as a search for truth—but it becomes one of self-discovery, love, and the realization that the past, no matter how deeply buried, still shapes the future.

A story of history, heartbreak, and redemption—where the wounds of yesterday lead to the hope of tomorrow.

Broken Bottle

Here’s an improved version of your synopsis, making it more compelling, clear, and polished:

Broken Bottle – Book Synopsis

Based on true events, Broken Bottle recounts the shocking real-life murders committed by Mickey Bradley on July 21, 1933, on Allumette Island in the Ottawa River, West Quebec, Canada. In a fit of rage and desperation, Bradley murdered five members of his own family—victims of a long-simmering feud rooted in rejection, resentment, and shattered dreams.

Michael “Mickey” Bradley had been an outcast in his own family since childhood. Despite years of hard work and financial contributions, he remained at odds with his father, while his siblings—who had done far less—retained favor. Living under one roof were Mickey’s aging parents, his sister, his brain-damaged brother, and Mickey’s own family. Yet it was Mickey whom his father ultimately cast out, telling him in October 1932 that “the bottles broke” between them—that whatever bond they once had was gone.

Nine months later, on a sweltering July night, Mickey returned for one final confrontation. His father demanded more financial help to cover farm debts, but when Mickey refused, his father delivered a crushing blow: Mickey would inherit nothing. The next morning, fueled by anger and betrayal, Mickey embarked on a brutal killing spree.

The gruesome murders sent shockwaves through the tight-knit Pontiac County community. Quebec Provincial Police detective Dalpé, a renowned investigator, was dispatched to lead the case in collaboration with the Pontiac County Sheriff’s Office. The trail of circumstantial evidence quickly pointed to Michael Bradley.

Jailed and terrified, Bradley attempted to shift suspicion onto another local man, but Dalpé applied aggressive interrogation tactics, ultimately extracting a confession. However, in the first trial—held in Campbell’s Bay, just 35 miles from the crime scene—the judge ruled the confession inadmissible. Bradley’s newly minted defense attorney, fresh to the Quebec Bar, faced off against an esteemed and seasoned prosecutor. With no eyewitnesses, no confession, and Bradley’s own desperate plea to the jury, the trial ended in a hung jury.

The Quebec government was determined to see justice served—the kind that would satisfy not just Quebecers, but people across Canada and the United States. That justice was a guilty verdict. The penalty: death by hanging.

For the second trial, the proceedings were moved to Hull, Quebec. This time, a different judge allowed Bradley’s confession as evidence. In a last-ditch effort, the defense pushed for a reduced charge of manslaughter or an insanity plea, but the jury was unmoved. Michael Bradley was found guilty.

On April 5, 1935, in Campbell’s Bay, Quebec, Michael Bradley was hanged for the murders of five family members.

Shadows Over Melfort

Captains John K. MacAlister and Frank Pickersgill, both from the Canadian Intelligence Corps, collaborated during World War II with British Special Operations in the Loire Valley, which was occupied by the enemy.

Born in Guelph, Ontario, on July 19, 1914, Captain MacAlister, a University of Toronto law graduate and Rhodes Scholar, displayed resilience. Captain Pickersgill, born on May 28, 1915, in Winnipeg, held a master's degree in classics from the University of Toronto.

Their pinnacle moment came on June 15, 1943, parachuting into the Loire Valley, to collaborate with the French Resistance. Fate turned harsh at the German checkpoint in Dhulzon, where their mission was exposed to the Gestapo.

Facing unimaginable torture, MacAlister and Pickersgill remained stoic, refusing to yield any information. Their destiny led them to the infamous Buchenwald concentration camp. On September 14, 1944, they were hanged from meat hooks, but maintained steadfast in the face of such adversity.

My story weaves fictionalized accounts inspired by real events. The portrayal of Canada as a sanctuary for war criminals post-World War II is a real element with the existing immigration laws enabling surreptitious entry. My character entering Canada illegally after the war is fictional. The portion relating to the1985 Deschene Commission is factual, but the events I write about are created from my imagination.

While not central to this narrative, 26 Canadian airmen among 168 allied airmen, were downed by enemy fire over France in June 1944. Captured by Germans, they endured beatings and torture by the Gestapo and were sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp to prevent their further participation in the war.

The lead fictional character, Geoffrey Gould, is based on Maurice Gould, a Jersey Island teenager who was captured by the Germans in 1942. Maurice died in the camp, and in 1997, his body was returned to Jersey Island. Geoffrey Gould, a fictional character, is a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman in the story and part of an actual squad combatting Quebec Separatist terrorists. However, the events I write about are fictional.

The Death of Paddy Donavon

This story is a blend of fact and imagination, rooted in the real events surrounding a bank robbery and its tragic aftermath. The robbery, carried out by two teenage boys in the late 1960s, ended in a dramatic confrontation at a bus stop, leaving one dead and the other gravely injured. The facts—gleaned from police reports, newspaper articles, and court testimonies—form the foundation of this narrative. Yet, to understand the boys’ motivations and choices, I’ve drawn upon my own experiences as a teenager during that time, imagining who they might have been and the culture that shaped them.

High school in the late ’60s was a world of contradictions. For boys, it was an era of camaraderie and competition, defined by sports, cars, and the magnetic allure of music. But beneath these motivators lay pressures that could alienate or misguide. Success often depended on fitting into rigid social molds, while those who struggled—academically, socially, or emotionally—were too often overlooked. Teachers might dismiss troubled students as hopeless cases, and opportunities for working-class kids were scarce, leaving many to dream of escape or rebellion.

In imagining Paddy and Gary, I’ve tried to capture this balance of hope and frustration. Paddy, the bright yet disillusioned student, saw the rules as obstacles to outsmart. Gary, quieter and timider, longed for a sense of belonging. Together, they planned a crime that they believed would change their fortunes, only to find themselves trapped by choices they couldn’t undo.

This story is both a reflection on a specific moment in history and a timeless exploration of youth—of potential and pitfalls, rebellion, and regret. It blends what I know of the era with the real, haunting facts of their fateful decisions, offering a window into lives that ended too soon or were forever changed.

True North: A Nation Stands

True North: A Nation Stands – A Political Thriller Synopsis

The war for Canada’s survival begins with a single, shocking act.

In a bold move for global dominance, U.S. President Jefferson Harland orders the invasion of Greenland. With no resistance, Navy SEALs seize Nuuk, and the American flag is raised within an hour. Harland claims it’s a strategic necessity, but the world sees the truth—a test run for annexation.

Canada is next.

Prime Minister Geneviève Lacroix refuses to surrender. As Harland wages economic warfare through crushing tariffs and cyberattacks, she builds alliances to counter American aggression. But Harland’s true plan is insidious—an orchestrated crisis designed to collapse Canada from within.

Resistance is growing.

True North, Strong and Free (TNSF), a nationalist movement, fights back. Lenny Bishop, a former RCMP officer, rallies citizens against U.S. interference, while Natalie Cheng, a brilliant economist, counters American disinformation and protects Canada’s financial stability.

Meanwhile, inside the FBI, Special Agent Elliot Kane plays a deadly game. As the new mole for the Pro-Democracy Movement (PDM), he uncovers Harland’s greatest vulnerability: billionaire Grant Winthrop, the President’s most powerful ally, who controls the U.S. government’s financial system. Kane delivers the evidence, and TNSF, PDM, and Canadian intelligence strike back—freezing Winthrop’s assets, crippling his empire, and turning his own power against him.

Then, Harland turns on Winthrop.

Betrayed by his own party and abandoned by his cabinet, Harland clings to power. Meanwhile, Winthrop, exiled to his private island, makes a final move—selling America’s most sensitive secrets to Russia, China, and Iran, determined to build a new global empire.

As the battle shifts from Washington to the world stage, Canada stands firm. Through strategy and unbreakable unity, it survives the greatest political assault in its history—not by force, but by outwitting a superpower bent on its destruction.

But the fight for freedom is never truly over.

Because in the shadows, another war is just beginning.

True North: A Nation Stands is a high-stakes political thriller where espionage, betrayal, and global power struggles collide. For fans of Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Michael Dobbs, this is the story of a nation that refuses to kneel—even when the world’s most powerful leader demands it.
