Blade and Blossom is a work of historical fiction inspired by the true story of Hangaku Gozen, one of the few documented female warriors—onna-musha—in Japanese history.
In 1201, during the the Kennin Rebellion, Hangaku Gozen fought bravely as a commander for the Jo clan against the Kamakura shogunate. She led three thousand troops and defended Torisaka Castle, ultimately being wounded and captured. Historical records say she was praised for her bravery and composure, even by her enemies. She was eventually pardoned and, according to legend, married a warrior named Asari Yoshito (also written as Yorito).
While the details of her later life are sparse, her legacy endures. This novel reimagines her story not only as a tale of war, but of identity, resilience, and love. I’ve taken artistic liberties to expand her voice, deepen her emotional journey, and craft a powerful narrative that honors her spirit.
Hangaku Gozen remains a symbol of quiet strength and the courage to stand tall when history demands silence. May her blade—and her blossom—never be forgotten.
