The Sweethearts of Death
Mercenary Wars of Africa
Early 1960s Africa was the Dark Continent of James Conrad, David Livingstone, and Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Often found in any of over 20 African nations traveller Michael Walsh identified with the period with which Europe’s last gladiators would also be familiar.
The dogs-of-war had worn the epaulettes of every nation. Now comrades-in-arms were veterans of the Waffen SS, The French Foreign Legion, British Parachute Regiment, Belgian, Dutch, and Irish and Swedish servicemen. Here is the real world of the men who made up the epic movie The Wild Geese.
Drawn into the Congo Crisis and Biafra War of Independence, the Sudan, South Africa and Rhodesia Bush Wars the soldiers-of fortune numbered in their ranks legends as Colonel Mike Hoare, ‘Black Jack’ Schramme, veteran Colonel Bob Denard, and Major Siegfried Muller.
We witness the heroic death of Marc Goosens, meet French Legionnaire Roger Faulques and Rolf Steiner. Never forgotten are Alexander Gay and Major Taffy Williams all of whom were truly the Last Gladiators of Europe.

Great Sayings and Stories of History
Your Soul Companion
How often I ponder on the forbidden privilege of sitting down and chatting with history’s most interesting people. Given a quiet room in an isolated rustic cottage with bay windows looking out on a bucolic scene who would you choose to spend a quiet summer’s evening with?
Given the daunting choice of people who over centuries changed history the question itself is tantalising. Besides, who you choose says much about you too.
Being a traveller, I would shortlist David Livingstone and as a historian King Edward VIII and Napoleon Bonaparte. As a writer, an evening with Charles Dickens has much appeal. I can also imagine a fireside chat to understand the motivation of emperors and revolutionaries better.
Great Sayings and Stories of History will help you to focus your mind on your choice of table talk companion.

The Dovetails Hotel
Faulty Towers with Added Spice
The Dovetails Hotel is a true-to-life account of an engaging relationship relished by the guesthouse’s attractive owners and their debonair handyman.
With much racy humour, this tell-it-as-it-is story brings to life a covert romantic lifestyle that is far more common than is generally thought.
The Dovetails Hotel is owned and managed by comely and captivating divorcees, Leonora and Felicity. After Felicity meets Gareth on a mutually arranged blind date tour of Europe the engaging Jack o’ all Maids is subsequently taken on as the hotel’s resident repairman.
Following a wonderful reception circumstances inspire Gareth to go beyond the call of duty when the trio’s mutually agreed state of affairs proves that three is not necessarily a crowd.
There follows the de-stigmatisation of a marriage endorsed by heaven. The between-the-sheets story is based on real life and is femininely laced with humour, girl talk, dilemmas, compromises, romance, and at times pathos.

A Sea Veneer of Liverpool
The Soul of Liverpool
In 2008 the 1,000-year-old city of Liverpool was designated European City of Culture. The award accompanied a period of urban renewal which for good and bad left in its wake a century-old culture. The outcome was a wake to which Michael Walsh raised The Parting Glass.
Before the bulldozers moved in and the venture capitalists descended the acclaimed writer and poet penned an evocative tribute to a disappearing Liverpool. A world traveller, the lyricist was inspired by universal love and respect for his home city. He says, ‘We enjoyed a celebrity status.’
His verse captures the soul of Liverpool as it was before the city was transformed. 3,000 copies of A Sea Veneer of Merseyside and Believing of Liverpool were sold out in weeks.
In evocative verse A Sea Veneer of Liverpool and most importantly the people of Liverpool receive due tribute. Having bravely stepped out across the millennium bridge A Sea Veneer of Liverpool pays homage to a disappearing city.

Britannic Waives the Rules
Last of the White Star Liners
MV Britannic (1929-1960) the last of the White Star Line (1845-1960) vessels had an illustrious pedigree. From a defunct packet company, it became one of the world’s most prominent shipping companies providing services between the British Empire and the United States.
In a deal made over a billiard table, White Star Line built six Oceanic Liners at Harland and Wolff, Belfast.
The shipping company thrived by carrying prospectors to the Australian Gold Rush (1851) during which period the population quadrupled and Klondike Gold Rush (1896).
White Star Line often made headlines for the wrong reasons. The company’s investments in 1867 broke the lending bank. Sold for £1,000 the company's Albion House head office in Liverpool stands as the company’s last monument.
Several maritime disasters befell the company of which the worst was the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Britannic Waives the Rules recounts the first-hand experiences of the vessel’s last crew and voyages before the liner was taken to the breaker’s yard.
