Sometimes heroes are ordinary people doing the best they can in confusing times.

Against the backdrop of the Second World War coming to an end, and a time of change into the early 1950s, teenager and young woman, Eileen Bonney, wrestles with webs of love, deceit and secrets as she tries to define herself amid the expectations, demands, friendships and lies of others.

Leaving school at age 13 to care for a distraught and ill mother and five siblings, abandoned but overseen by a philandering father, pursued by a deceitful older lover, fighting a battle with tuberculosis, Eileen survives as best she can in the hope that, one day, her world will be better.

But life isn’t about becoming - it’s about being.

This is a collage of an ordinary young woman’s coming of age in the 1940s and early 1950s, a time when Australian social mores and expectations were very different, and the impact and aftermath of a World War and austerity threw many ordinary Australian lives into disarray. Not all heroes achieve greatness and thrive in challenging times. Some simply survive.

As daughter of Harbin’s leader, the Dragon Head, Tamesan is expected to learn the traditional crafts and behaviours of a good wife because a dragonwarrior will choose her as his partner when she comes of age. But Tam doesn’t want to be a compliant wife. She wants to explore the mountain above her village and learn more about the world. A chance encounter with the Herbal Man, a recluse healer who lives on the mountain, gives Tam an opportunity to follow in his footsteps, against her parents’ wishes.

When the Harbin dragonwarriors sail south on their annual summer pilgrimage to fight dragons, Tam’s older brother travels with them as an initiate, but tragedy strikes, and Tam’s father and brother are lucky to return alive.

For Tam, the fateful journey and her relationship with the Herbal Man reveal a dark and terrible secret that lies at the heart of her village’s culture and another secret that is hidden in the mountain, and she must choose whether to expose the lies and tell the truth that will forever change everyone’s lives in Harbin or stay silent and submit to the village's cherished beliefs and traditions.

Haunted by the horrors of his summer initiation and caught up in the changes precipitated by the presence of a baby dragon on the mountain above his home, Chasse must do what he can to protect the people he loves while he comes to terms with an emerging relationship and his new role in the village.

Under his father's tutelage, Chasse continues his dragonwarrior training, but the return of an old foe to Harbin and the emergence of a new threat mean that Chasse must choose between the future of the village or the safety of his siblings and the treasure they are protecting.

Forced to abandon his home to protect his sister, Tam, his brother, Jaysin, and the young dragon, Chasse encounters a stranger in the mountains who shows him a different path towards overcoming his self-doubt and fears to become the warrior he is destined to be.

Always considered different because he has no interest in becoming a warrior like his older brother, Chasse, Jaysin's fascination with learning and magic grows stronger each year, but conflict with the Kermakk Imperial Army that comes to Machutzka seeking to conscript young warriors draws him into a quest to save the lives of his sister, Tamesan, and her dragon, Harmi.

His older brother’s capture while fighting the Kermakk, lead Jaysin to the capital of the mighty Kermakk Empire to find and rescue Chasse who has become an arena fighter, but there the Karudarteta, Inaya, a sorceress and advisor to the Empire's ruler, the Karudar Marfek, offers Jaysin access to ultimate arcane mastery, if he is willing to serve her unconditionally.

Faced with the opportunity to show his siblings that he is as worthy of admiration as they are, Jaysin must decide whether to embrace the power of magic by serving the Kermakk Empire, whose leader is determined to kill his sister and her dragon, or to sacrifice his personal ambitions to save his family.

And an ancient source of magic comes alive…

In her quest to rescue her human family, Harmi discovers her true dragon identity and the extent of her dragon powers, and the real reason why she is being hunted by the Kermakk sorceress, the Karudarteta.

In a world ripped apart by a brutal virus that mutates, spreads and continues to learn how to survive, the global community retreats and collapses, and in the vacuum created by the pandemic, and driven by ideological dreams of supremacy, fanatical armies rise to take over and invade nations struggling to retain order.

Against this tapestry of chaos, a survivor records their desperate journey to escape the virus and the war while they become embroiled in a frantic struggle to stop human extinction in the face of a zombie nightmare.
