Confessions of a Peace Terrorist
by Nicholas Bruechle
In a world without mirrors, you can’t see what you’ve become.
When Jayne Silver moves into a share house in Brooklyn with three young men, her charismatic best friend Abby quickly becomes a permanent house guest. Incensed by plans for yet another militaristic ‘humanitarian intervention’, the household friends create a pacifist-activist group, Patriots Opposed to War – POW.
The story of how these hazy hedonists graduate from low level vandalism to burglary and destruction, and ultimately to armed robbery and mass murder, is witty, engrossing and vibrant. It’s a story of relationships and ideals, appetites and adventures, and it leads to a shattering, bloody climax.
You’ll come away asking yourself, what good is war?
NYU history student Jayne Silver answers a Craigslist ad and moves into a house in Brooklyn, sharing with trust fund baby Lucas, slightly scabby Nevin, and cuddly but ultimately bold and bloody Bevan. Jayne’s best friend Abby quickly becomes a permanent fixture in the house, and that’s fine because she’s beautiful and charismatic.
News of yet another planned ‘humanitarian bombing’ in Venezuela fires the group’s imagination, and they form a group they call POW – Patriots Against War. At first, they’re typical slacktivists – smoking weed and writing pithy posts. But they embark on a vandalism spree in the subway, and this really gets the juices flowing.
From there, the thrill of risk and the allure of violence take hold, and things escalate through robbery, murder and kidnapping to massacre. It’s a wild, sometimes brutal but always sadly plausible tale of good intentions gone straight to hell.
Combining dark humor with social commentary, torrid action and moments of beauty, The World Without Mirrors is an absorbing, discomforting but addictive read.
“The book feels real and emotional. Some scenes are very violent and strong. It also criticizes politics and the government. Sensitive readers should be careful. Overall, this book is powerful and thought-provoking. It is best for mature readers who enjoy deep and serious thrillers. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.”

“The story was written entirely from Jayne's perspective as if sharing her and the group's experiences directly with me. I was feeling everything the characters were feeling. From celebrating their joy to mourning their loss. The raw description of violence was nauseating. The amount of emotions the book provoked within me was palpable, and it's what I believe every thriller lover craves.”

“The book is a compelling take on violent political positions, the justification of war, and the callous disregard of human life. It is well-written, tremendously descriptive, and thoroughly captivating. ”
Jeffrey S Brown, Online Book Club reader
“This fiery critique of American foreign policy is a page-turner that is bound to shock, fascinate, and challenge its readers.”

Having wasted his youth earning a living, Nicholas came to be an author relatively late in life, publishing his first book in his early 40's. His first two books were science fiction, and he has since concentrated on contemporary fiction. He has also written a quite a number of short stories (some of which can be read for free on his website) including numerous surfing stories. His published works include a book of surfing stories. We make the reality here.
In our oxygen-soaked future, the three F's of Fear, Freedom and Fame reign supreme, surveillance is a way of life, and the Gobblers are tightly controlled by the Sharps.
In this dystopian, post-apocalyptic world, Necker experiences a war like no other, Bock lives through the peaks and troughs of transient fame to become a revolutionary, and Biz is drafted into the ranks of the Sharps, destined to rule.
But Biz is different from the other Sharps, and he has the key to restoring true freedom to the people. Will he liberate the minds of the Gobblers, or does fate have something else in store for him?
The Psyman will have you questioning the nature of freedom, the art of propaganda, and the dangerous distraction of fame.
