Grant Stone, a clock shop owner, is one of the Time Keepers, a group of centuries-old men. They alone can see and interact with aliens who live inside clockwork clocks.
These aliens, called Time Wraiths by the Keepers, can, if they choose, harm humans by inducing a perception of time loss that can be deadly depending on what the victims are doing when it occurs.
Charlotte has seen something living inside antique clocks, but she fears them and the possibility that she is hallucinating and may be insane. In desperation, she is mysteriously drawn to Grant for help, but discovers much more.
When Charlotte enters his clock shop, Grant is mystified by why one of his wraiths, Becker, is behaving strangely.
This sets off a chain of events that not only uncovers a plot by an unknown Keeper to take over the world using the wraiths, involving Charlotte's brother, Curtis, and many more minions worldwide, but also reveals that Charlotte is the first female Keeper to emerge since the Wraiths and Keepers existed and that she is much more.
