Maputo River
by Paulo Chemane
Mozambican folklore tells of a brave woman who freed her community from danger and brought her people a better life.
Based on a true story.
Before Maputo became a city a few generations ago, a giant dragon snake would attack locals as they walked through the jungle to collect water from a nearby river.
One brave young woman decided to end the threat.
She cleverly tricked the snake into falling into a pot of boiled maize meal.
Wondered, tired and weak from injuries, the dragon finally collapsed and lay motionless.
To honour the bravery, a statue was erected as a beacon to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of the young woman, who freed the community from danger and brought a better life to the village.
