The Rescue of Travis Calder
by J.S. Leon
When college prodigy Travis Calder unveils his groundbreaking invention — the Quantum Vision Goggles — he believes he’s created a tool to study history. But when the government takes control, his discovery becomes the most dangerous weapon ever built.
Fifteen years later, the world seems perfect: crime is low, history is seemingly transparent, but truth is whatever the government says it is. And when a curious student named Alex stumbles across something he shouldn’t have seen, he ignites a chain of events that unravels a century of lies.
Hunted across time by cloned enforcers known as the DTO, Alex joins forces with the mysterious Dr. Keene and a rebel group from the future to find the missing inventor who started it all.
What begins as a search for truth becomes a fight for the survival of reality itself.
“Review of The Perils of Discovering Time Travel: The Rescue of Travis Calder, Book 1 by J.S. Leon There are few things more enjoyable than finishing a time travel novel written by someone you once had to remind to turn in assignments on time. Reading The Perils of Discovering Time Travel: The Rescue of Travis Calder felt a bit like watching a former student who was precocious, frequently imaginative, and never short on opinions, grow up and decide to bend the laws of physics for fun. And succeed. Jeff Leon dives headfirst into big ideas — time travel, consequence, loyalty, risk — and does so with the kind of confidence that suggests he’s been thinking about this universe for a long time. The plot is engaging, the stakes are clear, and the story moves with real momentum. It has that quality young adult readers appreciate: urgency, rawness, and high action The author isn’t content with a simple “what if we could time travel?” He explores the ripple effects, the ethical tension, and the emotional cost. That ambition is admirable — and unmistakably him. Now, because I once graded his work, I feel entitled to say this: occasionally the story barrels forward at the same speed its author’s mind likely does, and I had to reread some of the quick time change sequences so as not to miss any key bits of information. Lingering just a touch longer in an emotional moment — would enrich and contribute to better development of the characters. But that’s refinement, not foundation. The foundation is solid. And I’ll add this: as I was reading, I could vividly see this as a series on Netflix. The episodic structure is built in. The cliffhangers and high stakes practically invite visual storytelling. It has the scope and pacing that would translate beautifully to the screen. I have no idea how one gets a novel into the hands of producers, but that should absolutely be on the goal list. As his former teacher, I couldn’t be more pleased (or more entertained) to see where that once-precocious mind has taken us. If this is Book 1, I suspect the timeline ahead is going to get very interesting and I eagerly await the next installment.”
