Child Witness

by Renee Ritchie

A silent traumatised child holds the clue to a callous crime. Who will solve her secret?

Nothing much ever happens in the tiny country town of Table Top, until eight-year-old Rachel Moloney and her mum, Tess, fall victim to a hit-and-run-accident. Strangely, mother and daughter are mysteriously missing from the scene when the local policeman arrives, triggering a huge search and rescue effort- which has mixed success. Sarge leads the investigation into the crime, but the problem is that his only viable witness is a silent child.

Rachel leaves behind the dry paddocks of home for new adventures at the coast, where help is enlisted from expert child therapist, Miss Chris, in Manly, Sydney. Eventually, a non-verbal clue provides the turning point in the criminal case, leading to the identification of the perpetrator. Yet, Tess is in some sort of trouble … and the little witness must learn to trust and talk again.

The Case of the Unknown Baby

What a tale! Set against a backdrop of confusion in the aftermath of the 1989 Earthquake in Newcastle, Australia — an unknown baby girl is found by Veronica, a lapsed foster carer. “Ronnie” is pressed into service to look after the infant who hijacks her heart, along with everyone who meets her.
Eerily, it almost seems like Ronnie was destined for the task. She cannot shake a feeling of responsibility for and a growing connection to the mysterious missing mother and hatches a plan to reach out. Public opinion is polarised, but community support proves to be integral to the reunification and creation of family.
The Case of the Unknown Baby holds in tension both human frailty and decency. Using poetry, letters and articles to advance the story and give character clues, the tale
ends with a twist and a most pleasurable symmetry.
