The Officers Who Defied a Nation’s Doubt
by Thomas M. Bradley
Retired Army Colonel and Catholic Deacon.
Raised in Iowa in a large family, I attended the University of Iowa where I graduated as a Distinguished Graduate of Military Studies and commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Shortly after being married to Margaret, we started our life together at Ft. Benning, GA as an Infantry Officer. Over 30 years of active and reserve duty provided the honor of leading and training American soldiers. It was during this service that he became aware of the national events and leadership that led to the establishment of the first Army Officers Training Camp for black candidates during WWI. He believes service to the nation and its people to be a sacred honor. I entered discernment and studies for the Catholic diaconate, for which I was ordained in 2006. My first book is the completion of a promise to myself 20 years ago. I hope it brings to light a little-known breakthrough in Army and societal barriers.
