Everybody's Brother
by Tommy Clancy
Nothing prepares someone for those three words that change your life and those around you, forever, more than “You have cancer.”
People spend their entire lives without worrying about it, but when it hits home, it is devastating. As the cancer grows and consumes the body of its host, the life outside of the host is consumed with it.
There are friendships and then there are “friend ships.” One that will anchor itself in your harbor and bear the storm with you, no matter how rough the waters or dark the skies may become.
I knew I loved Kim as a brother, but I had no idea how deep that connection would be tested, time and time again.
The following story is based on real-life experiences, with real people and real emotions. Names in the story have been changed to protect the innocent, the young, the oblivious, and the casual bystander. It is written from the perspective of a best friend creating an online journal of the daily struggles in the life of a cancer patient and the loved ones around him.
The story is about Kim—written for the world to understand the amazing human being with whom we all were blessed to share our lives.
With hindsight in front of us, there are certainly obvious decisions that we would all change; however, hindsight is looking into the past, where regret sits waiting for you to second-guess every step on your path. Decisions are made in real time in the present. The future is the only hope where you can place your dreams and wishes.
I have yet to meet an individual who does not wish they could change their past in some form or fashion.
Official disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. There is medical terminology, medications, procedures, and the like that I did my best to research and relate at the time of the creation and ongoing updates of the website. Please consult professionals with any questions. The only things that I am able to offer are hope, love, and faith.
That is where Kim and I were intertwined. We understood that without faith, whether in ourselves, the process, or the holy spirit, that we would surely fail.
We were not born brothers. However, we were created to be brothers, everlasting and forever.
