Younga Bauru Journey is a beautifully illustrated First Nations children’s book that brings together storytelling, Yuwi language, connection to Country and care for the natural world.
The story follows Younga Bauru, a mother turtle, as she returns to the shore to lay her eggs, continuing a cycle that has taken place for generations. When the baby turtles hatch, they begin their challenging journey across the sand towards the sea, facing natural predators as well as dangers created by people, including rubbish and plastic left on the beach.
But Younga Bauru Journey is more than a story about turtles. It is a Yuwi language book designed to introduce young children to First Nations language through story. Yuwi words are woven throughout the book alongside their English meanings, allowing children to encounter and learn language naturally as the story unfolds.
