“As a school psychologist, I often encounter the challenges faced by students with neurodevelopmental disorders. One book that has profoundly enriched my understanding and practice is Sip by Sip: Candid Conversations with Adults Living with FASD by my dear friend, Patti Kasper. This invaluable read provides a candid and compassionate exploration of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), offering both real-life narratives and professional insights that resonate deeply with those of us working to support children. Patti, with substantial experience and a heart full of compassion, paints an unwavering picture of how FASD affects development. Through real-life conversations and valuable research, this book brings to light the invisible yet pervasive struggles of children and families navigating this disorder. What I found the most valuable was the balance between empathy and evidence-based practices, making it both relatable and practical. The developmental impacts of FASD—ranging from executive functioning difficulties to challenges in emotional regulation—are presented with clarity and depth. Patti skillfully bridges the gap between medical knowledge and its application in real-world settings, providing actionable strategies for educators, psychologists, and caregivers. This book emphasizes that understanding the nuances of FASD is not just a professional responsibility but a moral imperative if we are to build environments where these children and adults can thrive. Patti’s love and commitment to preventing, diagnosing, treating, and healing those affected by FASD shine through every page. Her writing is not only informative but also deeply moving, inspiring readers to become advocates for awareness and change. This book is a call to action—a reminder that together, we can raise awareness and develop supports that make a real difference. For anyone working with children and families, Sip by Sip: Candid Conversations with Adults Living with FASD is an essential addition to your library. It challenges us to see beyond the labels and statistics, to truly understand and meet the needs of those affected by FASD. In a field where resources are often scarce, this book is a beacon of hope and guidance. It reinforces the idea that while FASD may present unique challenges, with the right understanding and support, children and families can flourish.”
