Building a Marriage That Honors God
by Carl Van Vliet
A Biblical Blueprint for Marriage That Transforms Couples, Strengthens Families, and Displays God's Love to the World
In a culture where marriage is under relentless attack and divorce rates among Christians mirror those of the secular world, The Thread of Grace offers a clarion call back to God's original design for the most fundamental human relationship He created. Written by Carl Van Vliet, a pastor with over three decades of marriage experience, this book isn't another collection of marriage tips or communication techniques—it's a theological and practical guide to building marriages that reflect the covenant love between Christ and His Church.
Drawing from extensive biblical scholarship, historical church teaching, and thirty-two years of real-world marriage experience, Van Vliet presents a comprehensive approach structured in two essential parts: the first half establishes the biblical foundation through six foundational principles that form what he calls "the thread of grace," while the second half provides practical application for building your marriage on God's design.
A Personal Journey:
Van Vliet writes not as a detached observer but as a fellow traveler who has experienced both the pain of family brokenness (his parents divorced when he was twelve) and the joy of covenant marriage lived according to God's design. His vulnerability about his own struggles and growth creates a safe space for readers to examine their own marriages honestly while finding hope for transformation.
For Every Marriage:
Whether readers are newlyweds seeking to build on solid foundations, couples in crisis looking for hope, or seasoned marriages wanting to mentor others, The Thread of Grace provides biblical wisdom that applies to every season of married life. The progression from biblical foundation to practical application ensures that couples not only understand God's design but know how to implement it in their unique circumstances.
A Counter-Cultural Message:
In an age of therapeutic Christianity that prioritizes personal happiness over holiness, Van Vliet calls couples to a higher vision—marriage that exists primarily for God's glory rather than personal fulfillment. Paradoxically, this God-centered approach produces deeper satisfaction and joy than any self-focused alternative.
The Urgent Need:
With divorce devastating families, traumatizing children, and weakening churches, the need for biblically grounded marriages has never been greater. The Thread of Grace equips couples not merely to survive their differences but to thrive in their covenant, creating marriages that serve as means of grace to everyone they touch.
The Thread of Grace is more than a marriage book—it's a manifesto for reclaiming God's design for the relationship that serves as the foundation for family, church, and society. The unique structure ensures that couples first understand the "why" behind God's design before learning the "how" of daily implementation. In a world desperate to see authentic love, this book equips couples to become living demonstrations of the gospel through marriages that honor God and bless everyone they touch.
For readers seeking to build marriages that reflect God's heart, withstand cultural pressures, and create lasting legacy, The Thread of Grace provides both the biblical foundation and practical tools necessary for transformation. This is the marriage book the church has been waiting for—theologically sound, practically relevant, and genuinely hopeful.
