Coquito was created by Professor Everardo Zapata-Santillana, a Peruvian educator who in 1946, at just 20 years old, set out to design a better way to teach children to read and write in Spanish. Professor Zapata-Santillana has received Peru's highest honors in education, and in 2025, the first edition of Coquito was declared National Cultural Heritage of Peru.
