Coquito US was founded in 2006 with a simple but powerful mission: to bring one of Latin America's most beloved educational books to Hispanic and Latino families in the United States. Coquito was created by Professor Everardo Zapata-Santillana, a Peruvian educator who in 1946, at just 20 years old, set out to design a better way to teach children to read and write in Spanish. First published in 1955, Coquito has since taught more than 40 million people to read across 15+ countries and has never gone out of print. Professor Zapata-Santillana has received Peru's highest honors in education, and in 2025, the first edition of Coquito was declared National Cultural Heritage of Peru. Coquito US is led by Jaime Zapata, the author's son, who brought the book to the American market and secured its placement in Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
