About the Book
Harriet Godwin runs the best herbal tea shop in Crestwick and has one firm rule about magic: it stays quiet. Magic does not cause problems. Magic is nobody's business - least of all the town's.
That rule lasts exactly as long as it takes to find Aldous Bright dead on the bench outside her door. The beloved old professor looks, to everyone else, like a sad and ordinary heart attack. To Harriet, the faint scorched signature on his collar says something far worse: he was killed by released magic - old, blood-keyed craft - which means someone in Crestwick shares her secret and has no idea what they have done.
Now she is the prime suspect, the only qualified investigator, and somehow responsible for a centuries-old artifact still leaking somewhere in town. The county detective keeps turning up at The Loose Leaf with patient questions and an unhurried gaze, and every honest answer would require explaining things that cannot be explained. Her cat, Fig, was already waiting on the doorstep the morning she found the body. He always knows first.
To catch a killer who does not know she is a killer, Harriet will have to risk the one thing she came home to protect - and decide whether the truth is the same as justice, or only its neighbor.
Something wicked brewed in Crestwick. Harriet is going to have to figure out who poured it.
