MDI The Origin Story

MDI: The Origin Story is a leadership docu‑drama about a company that didn’t fail—it drifted. Meridian Dynamics International looks healthy from the outside, yet inside, a slow unraveling is underway. Over one pivotal month, leaders wrestle with micromanagement disguised as rigor, communication that clarifies nothing, hiring that values credentials over competence, and talented people who quietly disengage. Veterans leave. New hires don’t fit. Incentives backfire. Everyone stays busy while the culture erodes.

Told through meetings, private reflections, and global perspectives from Phoenix, Berlin, Singapore, and Atlanta, this story reveals how strong organizations lose their way—not through crisis, but through accumulation.

No lessons. No frameworks. No fixes. Just a mirror.

For readers of The Invisible Leadership Series, this is the world those ideas came from. For new readers, it stands alone as an unsettlingly familiar portrait of a company drifting off course while everything still looks fine.

MDI: The Origin Story is a leadership docu-drama about a company that didn’t fail—
it drifted.

Meridian Dynamics International (MDI) is a successful, growing global organization. Its products work. Its customers stay. Its metrics are green. From the outside, nothing appears broken.

Inside, something is quietly unraveling.

Across one pivotal month, leaders struggle with micromanagement disguised as rigor, communication that multiplies but clarifies nothing, hiring practices that replace experience with credentials, and capable people who slowly stop speaking up. Long-tenured employees leave without conflict. New hires arrive highly skilled but culturally disconnected. Incentives meant to retain talent make things worse. Everyone stays busy. Very little gets better.

Told through meetings, private reflections, internal messages, and regional perspectives across Phoenix, Berlin, Singapore, and Atlanta, MDI: The Origin Story documents how good organizations lose their way—not through crisis, but through accumulation.

There are no lessons in this book.
No frameworks.
No fixes.

This story exists to help leaders recognize what often goes unseen while performance still looks acceptable and intentions remain good.

For readers familiar with The Invisible Leadership Series, this book reveals the world those ideas were born from. For new readers, it stands alone as a mirror—uncomfortably familiar, quietly accurate, and difficult to forget.

This book is the origin story for The Invisible Leadership Series.

Author

John S. Muir is a leadership and organizational strategist with more than three decades inside complex organizations, and the author of The Invisible Leadership Series.

John S. Muir writes about the parts of an organization nobody puts on the org chart. His work starts from a single claim: that leadership is not a personality trait or a set of behaviors, but a structure — one that either holds weight when the leader leaves the room, or does not. Most organizations never find out which they have until the answer costs them something.

That argument came out of four decades of watching it happen. He founded and grew a hospitality and entertainment business in the 1980s before moving into global technology leadership in the mid-1990s, and has since led operational and strategic teams across technology, manufacturing, professional services, and global service delivery — in startups and in Fortune 500 companies, with distributed teams across three continents. He has been on both sides of the transformations that work and the ones that quietly do not.

He is the founder of NINETEEN64 Consulting, where he works with executive teams and boards to diagnose organizational friction, restore alignment, and design leadership systems that survive real-world pressure. His approach is diagnostic rather than prescriptive. He does not arrive with a framework to install; he helps leaders see the system they are already running, including the parts of it they built without meaning to.

That is what the books do as well. The Invisible Leadership Series examines leadership as a system rather than a personality — the patterns that cause capable organizations to stall, the dynamics that erode trust, and the conditions that let people do their best work. It is grounded in observation rather than theory, and in pattern recognition rather than prescription, on the belief that before an organization can change it has to see itself clearly, and most never take the time to look. John lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
