All Writers Are Liars

by Nicholas Bruechle

As writer Baker McCloud works on his most ambitious novel, he finds himself entangled with his own creations—Malcolm, who seeks redemption, and Murray Flout, who revels in provocation.
Blurring the line between author and character, All Writers Are Liars is a sharp, darkly funny exploration of truth, fiction, and the stories we tell to make sense of ourselves.

About The Book

Baker McCloud is writing what he hopes will be his best book. A strange, ambitious work that refuses to behave, All Writers Are Liars is part novel, part provocation, and part confession. Inside it live two men: Malcolm, who wants to be better than he is, and Murray Flout, who doesn’t give a shit.
As the manuscript takes shape, the line between the author and his characters begins to blur. Malcolm is reaching for redemption following a disastrous two year breakdown, while Murray is pushing the boundaries of taste and structure. He questions who has the right to tell certain stories, most dangerously through a confronting tale of survival that may not be his to tell.
And then there’s McCloud, whose own life intrudes onto the page. He wants success, recognition, and the approval of the person who knows him best – and is increasingly troubled by the suspicion that the truths he’s uncovering in his work might expose more about him than he’s ready to face.
Sharp, darkly funny and uncomfortably honest, All Writers Are Liars explores the messy space between fiction and reality – and asks whether storytelling is an act of deception, or the only way we ever find the truth.

“All Writers Are Liars by Nicholas Bruechle is a riotous, challenging, frank, and gloriously in-your-face investigation of where our current cultural concerns may be leading us. ”

Jon Michael Miller, Readers Favourite

“…dark humor at its best, with so much truth in it that it’s scary to read. At its heart, it’s about culture, about the direction the world is taking in terms of gender equality, but it evolves into something much more personal, a sharply accurate, eye-opening book that asks an important question: Are authors really just telling a story, or is there more than a little truth in what they produce? ”

Ann-Marie Reynolds, Readers Favourite

“Readers who enjoyed similar works like R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface would appreciate what Bruechle did with All Writers Are Liars. It’s a journey through authorship, performance, insecurity, and the stories people tell themselves for survival’s sake.”
