The ticking grew louder.
The shadows leaned.
Julius stepped toward the washing machine.
It was vibrating now.
Not shaking.... it seemed like it was thinking....
The round glass door began to spin.
Slowly.
But the machine wasn’t on.
Julius leaned closer.
Inside… He didn’t see clothes.
He saw motion.
Light.
Time folding over itself.
A sock appeared.
Then vanished.
A glove formed.
Wrinkled.
Aged.
Then snapped back to new.
Julius gasped.
His fingers tightened around the flashlight.
The washing machine groaned.
Not like a machine.
Like something waking up.
The metal sides shimmered.
They bent the light around them.
The dials rearranged themselves.
Numbers started spinning backwards.
Symbols appeared Julius had never seen before.
One looked like an hourglass filled with lightning.
Another pulsed like a heartbeat.
“The Time Engine,” Julius whispered.

Papa Derrick is a retired Navy veteran, father of an incredible daughter, and grandfather of two of the smartest and creative kids you'll ever meet. When my daughter was in her elementary school years, we would have all kinds of family adventures. In honor of Stevie, we would find the wonder and excitement in the world around us. Creating imaginary places, people, and events that captured the excitement of exploration and discovery. Museums, chocolate factories, amusement parks, weekend getaways to friends and relatives, all became a journey to the unexplored. I created story books back then out of paper and colored pencils. I told stories to my daughter of wonderful places and unique people. We created all kinds of art and craft projects together. I sewed (badly mind you) costumes for some of our outings and adventures. Renaissance Fairs, the Circus, and fishing trips were always welcome events with new adventures, characters and memories. As a grandfather, I'm still exploring and discovering the world around me. I travel this amazing country with my two dogs Linus and Lucy, seeing wondrous places and meeting people from all over the world, walks of life, with fantastic stories of their own. I will continue to seek adventures in this life for as long as I am here. I am truly grateful for my family and friends. May your lives be filled with wonder.
