Julius said quietly, "This calls for… being prepared."
Noah blinked, "Prepared for what?"
"For a serious adventure," Julius said.
He walked to his dresser and slowly opened the bottom drawer like it was a secret.
First, he pulled out his lucky shirt… the one he always wore when it was time for an adventure.
He took off his pajamas and slipped the shirt over his head.
Then he grabbed his adventure scarf, the red one that always made him feel braver, and tied it carefully around his neck.
Next came his jeans and adventure belt...
It drooped the same way it always did, and Julius loved it for that.
He tied on his twine and looked at his dresser.
He pulled his adventure pouch over his head.
Noah stared at him like he was watching a transformation.
"Wow," Noah said, "That was… awesome."
Julius nodded seriously.
Then he looked at Noah.
"You need to get geared up too."
Noah glanced down at himself.
"I don't have any of that stuff."
"That's okay," Julius said confidently, "We'll figure it out."
He rummaged through his drawer and handed Noah one of his t-shirts.
"Adventure shirt," Julius explained.
Noah took off his pajamas and pulled it on over his head.
"Nice," Noah said, "Instant explorer."
Noah put on his pants and socks.
Julius moved on to the next important piece.
"Every adventurer needs a scarf," Julius said.
He ran to the hall closet and dug around until he found…
A long, fuzzy, bright green scarf with bells on each end.
Julius held it up proudly, "This," he said, "is perfect."
Noah stared, "That looks like it belongs on a dancing elf."
"Exactly," Julius said, "Very rare."
He wrapped it around Noah's neck.
The bells jingled every time Noah moved.
Noah laughed, "I'm not going to sneak anywhere with this."
"Sneaking is overrated," Julius said.
Noah looked down at himself, "So," Noah said, "what are we now?"
Julius stood tall, "Official Adventure Detectives."
Noah grinned, "Let's solve this mystery."

Papa Derrick is a retired Navy veteran, father of an incredible daughter, and grandfather of two of the smartest and creative kids you'll ever meet. When my daughter was in her elementary school years, we would have all kinds of family adventures. In honor of Stevie, we would find the wonder and excitement in the world around us. Creating imaginary places, people, and events that captured the excitement of exploration and discovery. Museums, chocolate factories, amusement parks, weekend getaways to friends and relatives, all became a journey to the unexplored. I created story books back then out of paper and colored pencils. I told stories to my daughter of wonderful places and unique people. We created all kinds of art and craft projects together. I sewed (badly mind you) costumes for some of our outings and adventures. Renaissance Fairs, the Circus, and fishing trips were always welcome events with new adventures, characters and memories. As a grandfather, I'm still exploring and discovering the world around me. I travel this amazing country with my two dogs Linus and Lucy, seeing wondrous places and meeting people from all over the world, walks of life, with fantastic stories of their own. I will continue to seek adventures in this life for as long as I am here. I am truly grateful for my family and friends. May your lives be filled with wonder.
