A YOUNG BOY MUST LEARN THE WAYS OF A WARRIOR IF HE IS EVER TO BECOME A PIT GUARD
Far to the north of Ananduil, in the province of Kedielewen, a peaceful fishing village celebrates the harvest year when raiders attack.
Orphaned and left to fend for himself after the massacre of his entire village, the tanner’s boy chances upon an encounter with a seasoned soldier, Commander Steigauf. A Pit Guard of Dendadia.
Taken under Steigauf’s wing, the boy begins his training at the Shiverwind barracks and quickly gathers the skills to defend himself and fight for others.
When a rider from across the land arrives seeking help with an investigation of the heinous murder of an unknown traveller, the boy accompanies Steigauf and a small band of unskilled soldiers, to Mountainfall, a place with a terrifying history and reputation.
Along the way, the boy battles his inner demons, discovers love, and prepares to stare into the face of death.
But nothing could prepare him for what awaits at Mountainfall.
“Gripped me and wouldn't let me out of it's clutches! This book was a fantastic ride and I'm sad to leave these characters and the world the author built behind me until the next book is released. It's not a fantasy book about magic, but of friendship, battles and finding your way (including love). Put a wolf in the mix and add creatures usually found in nightmares (e.g. man-wolves) plus a little mystery and you get this book. This can be read as a standalone as it's a finished story in itself with the promise of seeing more of the characters in the books to follow.”
Goodreads Review
“Pitguard: The Tanner's Boy by Robert E Kreig is written in true epic style. The world-building is vibrant, with every page filled with such detail that the reader becomes absorbed in the narrative. It has been a while since I read a book that gave me palpitations and apprehension about the obstacles the characters would encounter and how they would overcome them, whether it is a monster or something more mundane. Robert Kreig has kept to the parameters of classic high fantasy and created a believable world with racial tensions and prejudice. Small-town dynamics and superstitions are also used to provide authenticity to the milieu and characters. He has created a marvelous book that is excellent as a stand-alone but I would love to read more of Arnald and his journey to become a Pit Guard.”

Robert E Kreig is an Australian author of epic fantasy and suspense-driven fiction, writing stories of survival, duty, fear, and consequence.
Robert E Kreig was born in Newcastle, Australia, and grew up in its outer suburbs, where a love of storytelling took root early. From a young age, he was drawn to books that combined action, adventure, and an undercurrent of fear — stories that asked what people are capable of when tested. As a reader, Robert was shaped by authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Stephen King, Orson Scott Card, Ray Bradbury, and Frank Herbert. As his tastes broadened, he found further inspiration in the works of George R. R. Martin, Matthew Reilly, Nathan M. Farrugia, Dan Brown, James Patterson, Michael Connelly, and Lee Child. Across genres, he gravitated toward stories driven by momentum, moral tension, and consequence. Cinema played an equally formative role. Films like Star Wars, King Kong, Jaws, and Jason and the Argonauts helped fuel a fascination with mythic adventure, looming danger, and the quiet moments before everything goes wrong. Those influences eventually coalesced into The Woodmyst Chronicles, a ten-book epic fantasy series shaped by long-form storytelling, evolving characters, and a world where every choice carries weight. In addition to his fantasy work, Robert has written several standalone novels, including Long Valley, The Calm Voice, and Pit Guard: The Tanner’s Boy. Across both series and standalone stories, his fiction explores survival, duty, fear, and the human cost of violence — whether the threat comes from monsters, institutions, or the mind itself. Robert currently lives in Canberra, Australia, where he continues to write with the aim of one day becoming a full-time author.
