Building Healthy Churches Through Intentional Biblical Design
by Dr. Gary H. Woolverton
Church growth is not accidental—and it is never merely numerical. True growth is the natural fruit of spiritual health, faithful leadership, and intentional ministry design rooted in God’s purposes for the church.
Church Growth By Design offers a biblically grounded and pastorally wise framework for understanding and cultivating growth that honors Christ, forms disciples, and strengthens the local church for long-term faithfulness. Rather than chasing trends or relying on quick-fix solutions, this book challenges church leaders to rethink growth as a designed process—one shaped by theology, mission, structure, and spiritual formation.
Drawing from Scripture, ministry experience, and proven leadership principles, this volume addresses the deeper questions behind growth:
What does Scripture truly teach about growth in the church?
How do churches distinguish healthy growth from unsustainable expansion?
What systems, structures, and leadership practices support lasting fruit?
How can churches measure progress without reducing ministry to metrics?
How does spiritual maturity, discipleship, and mission fuel authentic growth?
Church Growth By Design emphasizes that growth must be intentional, holistic, and aligned—spiritually, relationally, organizationally, and missionally. Readers are guided through the theological foundations of growth, the role of leadership and culture, the importance of discipleship pathways, and the necessity of designing ministry systems that serve people rather than overwhelm them.
This book equips:
Pastors seeking clarity and confidence in leading growth faithfully
Church leaders navigating change, transition, or revitalization
Ministry teams designing discipleship and engagement pathways
Churches desiring sustainable growth without compromising spiritual integrity
As part of the Ministry By Design series, Church Growth By Design helps churches move beyond reacting to decline or chasing attendance—and toward cultivating healthy growth by God’s design. Growth becomes not a burden to manage, but a reflection of a church aligned with Christ’s mission, empowered by the Spirit, and committed to forming disciples who grow in faith, community, and service.
