Position Descriptions By Design (2nd Edition)
Building Clarity, Accountability, and Alignment in Church Ministry
Effective ministry requires more than passion—it requires clarity. Position Descriptions By Design (2nd Edition) equips pastors, ministry leaders, and church administrators with the theological grounding and practical tools needed to create clear, mission-driven position descriptions that strengthen ministry teams and support long-term church health.
Drawing from decades of pastoral leadership and ministry consulting, Gary Woolverton provides a biblically rich and organizationally sound framework for defining ministry roles with purpose and precision. This fully revised edition guides readers step-by-step through understanding the theology behind church structure, crafting clear expectations, aligning teams with mission, and fostering a culture of accountability and healthy leadership.
With expanded narrative content, updated tools, and refined best practices, this edition serves as both a training resource and a reference guide for churches of all sizes. Each chapter is designed to help leaders:
Understand the biblical foundations for structure and stewardship
Identify the essential components of an effective position description
Clarify responsibilities and boundaries for staff and volunteers
Build alignment between roles, ministry strategy, and church vision
Strengthen leadership development, evaluation, and communication
Whether you are restructuring a ministry team, onboarding new leaders, or building a comprehensive church staffing system, Position Descriptions By Design offers practical wisdom, theological insight, and a proven process for building ministries that serve with excellence, unity, and purpose.
This volume is part of the acclaimed Ministry By Design series—resources created to help churches build intentional, Christ-centered ministries that reflect God’s design for His people.
