A faint creak... A wooden groan... and... was that...? A PIRATE SHIP! Julius's heart thumped. "Oh no.", he breathed, and grinned at the same time. From around the bend came the most impossible thing Julius had ever seen and also the most amazing. A pirate ship. Not a huge one like in the movies. This one was the size of a canoe with delusions of grandeur. It had a mast made from a straight branch. It had a sail that looked suspiciously like a white pillowcase. It had a flag with a skull on it that might have been drawn with marker. And it floated down the rushing creek like it owned the place. On board were pirates. REAL PIRATES! or at least... pirates the way Julius's imagination made them: coats patched with colorful fabric, belts loaded with ridiculous tools, hats with feathers, and expressions that said, "We are here for adventure!" They were terrifyingly silly!

Papa Derrick is a retired Navy veteran, father of an incredible daughter, and grandfather of two of the smartest and creative kids you'll ever meet. When my daughter was in her elementary school years, we would have all kinds of family adventures. In honor of Stevie, we would find the wonder and excitement in the world around us. Creating imaginary places, people, and events that captured the excitement of exploration and discovery. Museums, chocolate factories, amusement parks, weekend getaways to friends and relatives, all became a journey to the unexplored. I created story books back then out of paper and colored pencils. I told stories to my daughter of wonderful places and unique people. We created all kinds of art and craft projects together. I sewed (badly mind you) costumes for some of our outings and adventures. Renaissance Fairs, the Circus, and fishing trips were always welcome events with new adventures, characters and memories. As a grandfather, I'm still exploring and discovering the world around me. I travel this amazing country with my two dogs Linus and Lucy, seeing wondrous places and meeting people from all over the world, walks of life, with fantastic stories of their own. I will continue to seek adventures in this life for as long as I am here. I am truly grateful for my family and friends. May your lives be filled with wonder.
