Printing formulas last verified 17 August 2026 against Amazon KDP's US paperback guidance and Books.by printing and royalty information.
Amazon KDP's print cost is only one part of the calculation. For paperbacks sold on Amazon, your royalty is usually 60% of list price minus printing cost. For expanded distribution, the royalty basis is lower. That means a cheap print cost can still produce a modest author royalty.
Books.by usually costs a little more to print, but it does not take a platform commission from direct sales. The comparison includes the direct order's shipping shortfall and card fee so the result reflects the base US transaction rather than print cost alone.
KDP is excellent for Amazon discovery. If a reader finds your book through Amazon search, Amazon recommendations, or Kindle ecosystem browsing, KDP earned the sale. Keep it in your platform mix.
If the reader came from your newsletter, Instagram bio, podcast, speaking event, course, client base, or author website, you earned the traffic. Send that traffic to your own store where you keep the margin and get the customer relationship.
Use KDP for Amazon discovery. Use IngramSpark for bookstore/library availability. Use Books.by for owned traffic. The goal is not to replace every platform - it is to stop giving away margin on sales you created yourself.
Use the print cost calculator to compare more print providers, the royalty calculator for more sales channels, or the book profit calculator for annual projections. For strategic platform fit, see best self-publishing platforms.
Use Amazon for marketplace discovery, then compare KDP take-home against a Books.by direct store for readers you bring yourself, with customer emails and daily payouts.
